Spam problem on Cavechat

I have seen a daily spammers lately, morning and now evening. What in the world do these looser get from this? Have you looked at the business that they represent, and contacted them about their resources they use for advertising?

I really enjoy taking care of the forum here, I admit the latest rounds of spam have been frustrating but it will pass. Few people realize how much time the mods and myself have put into keeping spam off the forum. For every spam message that gets through to be seen the mods have deleted probably 10 and thats on a normal basis. The latest spam attacks have been terrible, in the last week alone the mods and I have literally deleted hundreds and possibly thousands of these spam accounts that the Russian spam bots have created.

Haha I like it, we have been wanting to market Cavechat. What better way then sending thousands of unsolicited messages to the Russian spam network.

I know allot of users have already been changing their passwords but I would like to encourage everyone to make sure they have a secure password for accessing Cavechat.org. I have been researching the spammers and found that they switch from spamming to trying to brute force hack forums after their spam is successfully being blocked.

I certainly know and appreciate the work you and the mods go through to maintain this forum. I sure many of the cavechaters subconsciously appreciate it too.

Maybe some preventative measures can be taken by deleting new members with obvious spammer websites. A quick look of the Members Links will shows websites like:

• http://livesexecams.com/blog-sexe/roulettelyrics/?p=4
• http://www.seomarketingservicesonline.com
• etc.

At least they can't do their first post!

Maybe the next level would be to look at their profile for potential spammers info like:

• Interests:elliptical machines
• Occupation:Real, Interests:Playing cards
• Occupation:bingo klub, Interests:gry online za darmo poker
• etc.

As they say, "An ounce of prevention..."

Pub, it looks like you've got a lot of no-how to assist David on these problems. Anything you can suggest to him, I'm sure he'll make use of. We're getting this BS on other listservs, as well, and it's downright stupidity on these creative individuals to be wasting so much time on doing it. I don't believe they're gaining anything financially, so what's in it for them? Just to screw up cyberspace and the world? Aren't there enough problems out there...especially in the Middle East? Thanks for your thoughts...and I'm sure David will be yakking with you...if not someone else.

That must have been a long time ago, Jerry. It is Jerry, right? Something rings a bell that you were at the WR meeting in Lava Beds this past October. Anyway, if you were at Humbolt wayyyyy back when, maybe you remember a former caver by the name of Don Bird, who worked at one of the pizza places around that area, along with his classes.

As for getting into cyberspace, me thinks you really are the man to assist David, so we need some good thinking dudes who know this stuff.

Yep, it's jerry... HAR! A ballpark figure, about 35+ years ago and since I'm a recent convert to the underground I didn't get the pleasure of meeting Don.

You may have seen my slideshow presentation given by one of our advisors from SoCal Grotto during the October WR meeting. He was also there to pickup the WR equipment donation for our grotto; we got a lot of good (used but serviceable) vertical gear. Thank You WR!

Right now we are in the process of figuring out exactly how the spammers are bypassing the anti spam features of the board. Once we know for sure how they are posting their spam we can get rid of them for good. Right now I am afraid its just a waiting game while Darrell Wells and myself try to gather as much data we can about the spammers.

fyi if I keep the "notify me when taken care of" checked it's because I forgot/was too lazy to move the radiobox to the "no" from the default "yes".

Not sure how many noticed that there has been quite a reduction in spammers and the members' database has been relatively void of possible spammers.
