Article about Britain's Mega-System

Postby LukeM » Sep 2, 2010 9:23 am

Apologies if this has been posted before. The article is about a month old. I found it to be a fascinating nat-geo-style read, of course with the requisite drama focusing on dangers. Props to our brethren across the pond!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1296308/Into-abyss-Stretching-counties-70-miles-inside-Britains-vast-newly-pioneered-cave-system.html

There are few untrodden places left on the surface of the planet but under our feet lies a network of caves that has never been explored. Pitch dark and perilous, Britain's largest tunnel system stretches beneath three counties and for decades cavers have only dreamed of discovering a link between them. Until now...

That was a good read, thanks.

:kewl:

Nice pics and map, too.
Letting the days go by / water flowing underground
Into the blue again / in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones / there is water underground.

I read the news today oh boy,
4000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small,
They had to count them all...

I think this is about the 4th time I have read of a major discovery being made after draining a sump......and I'm thinking of several places where we were stopped at sumps......maybe I'm gonna have to take hydroengineering more seriously. :big grin:
I'm not scared of the dark, it's the things IN the dark that make me nervous. :)

Here's a video showing a couple of these cavers working a dig. Tricky stuff to say the least.
