Meth Lab Found In Tennessee Cave

Postby Larry E. Matthews » Jul 16, 2010 11:46 am

I was watching the local (Nashville, TN) Channel 5 news last night (Thursday, July 15) and they had a feature on about a Meth Lab being found in a White County, Tennessee cave.

They didn't name the cave and there are hundreds and hundreds of caves in White County. There was a photo of the meth lab itself, but I didn't see a photo of the cave's entrance.

The meth makers know the caves are closed, what a perfect spot to elude with no cavers being allowed to check out the caves. The public has been asked by the nature conservancy to close their private owned caves to cavers.

There is a picture of the inside room of the cave where the meth lab was found. It is on the front page of the Expositor (Sparta newspaper) It says the cave is in the southern portion of White County.

Are they sure it was meth and not cocaine? Could be another white nose site....

You've never met Peter because he only exists in caver mythology. I mean how on Earth could one human being do all that? He must be a deity. Or a robot driven by a control room full of programmers. Maybe he has his own secret lab tucked away in a cave somewhere? :tonguecheek:

Oh, hi Peter. I didn't see you standing there. :waving:

Evan - You're most welcome. Come meet me at the Vermont convention! (shameless plugs will continue). Jansen - where the heck are you standing right now? And I don't see you on the convention registration list either, Mr. Central Connecticut Grotto. You're leaving all that gear lending work to your Grotto mates? Talk about shameless! At least come and take a picture. :waving:

Yes, it is shameless. Standing here in Arizona it doesn't look like I'll be making it to convention this year, despite my best intentions. Unfortunately I'm not quite as omnipresent as some people think. A few of my photos will be there, though.

I'm offering moral support to my grotto and their mammoth gear-lending effort. Now it's time to log off and go caving for the day.

But, Jansen, there are no caves in Arizona...to speak of. Yeah, yeah, yeah! :off topic: I know, I know! Gonna miss seeing you in VT...and all the problems you'd wanna take care of.

Thanks for the info Larry,

This is the third cave based meth lab I know of in White Co. Hooray for the TWRA officer who caught him!
There was a major Meth lab chemical spill in a Franklin Co. Cave in '04.
Sadly, one more thing to be on the lookout for.

Cory, do you know what happens to the cave after the finding of a lab? Does the TWRA clean it up?

At the two cave labs I was involved in, the responsibility fell to the county sheriff's dept., but there was some cooperation from other agencies and the TN Meth Task Force.

Sorry Brian,

I guess the answer you were looking for is yes, the cave is cleaned up.
However if you have a large spill, there is only so much they can do.
