I think I have a cave that opened up on my property

Postby Digirolomo » Sep 1, 2011 10:48 pm

I live in Campbellsburg, IN. I have about 20 acres. The other day when walking in my woods, I noticed an opening in the bottom of a sinkhole. The sinkhole had been there since we bought the house, but now there appears to be a cave that opened up at the bottom.

I am assumming the heavy rains from Katrina (yes they made their way up to us), broke it open??

I am not a caver, but talked to some people at work. One guy menitioned the NSS so I thought I would post it here. I am not the adventurous type to explore it. I may pay the neighbor kid $20 to check it out or I may just try and fill it in so no one gets hurt.

Is there anyone from your group that could check it out? Maybe I could make it a tourist thing as there are some caves in the area that I see billboards for.

sure wish I could help you but I'm in Georgia. There will probably be some Indiana cavers along shortly that will be happy to check out your sinkhole.
Is it blowing any air out at the moment?

Currently, Washington County has 214 caves, quite a few around Campbellsburg. It's quite likely you have a cave. Which direction are you from Campbellsburg?

I would not pay a neighbor kid to enter your cave. You are opening yourself up to a huge lawsuit.

Digirolomo,
Since you may not be familiar with this forums layout, if you check the light blue header at the top of this page you should see that you have 1 new message. That would be from me. I would very much like to see this new hole in the ground you have and I believe I can give you useful advise on dealing with it, be it a proper cave or not. I am in the area most weekends and look forward to hearing from you.
