Cave wear for hot caves

While at the ICS in Texas, it quickly became apparent why it had been recommended that we didn't wear too much clothing underground. But for caving in the UK, it's rare to wear anything less than an undersuit and oversuit. So exactly what should be worn as leg covering was not obvious. Something thicker than thermal underwear, and robust, but not as loose and thick as track suit bottoms? What is the leg wear of choice for you in the hot caves of the south? Even if the brand names you mention may not be available here, there should be something generically the same.

How about Cordura stretch tights like these?

For more ideas, take a look though the Alternatives to a Caving Suit topic.

You plannin' on heading south again, Joe? I've worn shorts with long shin/kneepads, and it's been great.

I loved caving in Cuba where I got all sweaty in a tank top, then stopped to rest, and didn't freeze.

Hey Joe, I thought UK caves were kinda warm...
When I cave south, I do as SG suggests; shorts and tee shirt, gloves and knee pads. You can add polypro tights under your shorts if you're cold. For groveling, slip on cotton coveralls (a la mechanic) rather than a proper oversuit. And unless it's mucky, leave the wellies at home; low hiking boots are better.

:yeah that:

For really hot stuff I wear reinforced shorts, a t-shirt, light boots, light rubber palm gardeners gloves and knee pads. The knee pads can chafe and many people I know wear tights or a short cutoff piece of tights under the knee pads. Also elbow pads for really sharp crawls.

For slightly cooler caves I have a pair of loose nylon gym pants that are fairly cool and don't get caught easily.

I also find that Gatorade and snacks with electrolytes help me a lot.

There is a cave in VA (Warm River?) that people strip down to just their skivvies, and kneepads.... oh yea, and helmet.

In the warmer caves out here in Arizona, I wear a t-shirt and pants. Not thin pants or running nylon pants, but usually something a bit thicker to protect my legs. Dickies make a nice pant that hold up well and don't get too hot. Since the caves out here are mostly dry, cotton isn't an issue. I have caved in shorts, but just don't care for how my knee pads chafe my legs. In the cooler (cold like in the 60's  ) caves just simple mechanics style coveralls. They don't have the insulating layer on cave suits, just simple 1 piece of a polyester/cotton blend. Again, without any water, cotton is just fine.

Typical caving involving minimal water: Tights for the legs, boxer shorts for the behind, long sleeve shirt. Pollies in the pack.

Scott, great pics of Mrs. Miller's Cave. Did you get to see the high, dry sandy passage with the very long selenite needles? At least they were there some years ago. (Off topic, I know. Sorry)

In order to prevent knee chafing while shorts caving you just need to modify your kneepad choice. I usually wear howitzers (bomber gear style pads) but don't like them on bare skin. They act as scoops for sand and grit and once that gets behind the pad your knees are toast. Instead get something that elastically fits to your leg like volleyball kneepads. You can get them at Wally World and they last longer than you might think.
