Between Screech Owl & Pettyjohn

Postby BrianFrank » Feb 27, 2012 1:46 pm

After caving in Pettyjohn's this past Sunday we decided to explore the forest between Pettyjohn and Screech Owl cave. We found an estimated 40' pit between both caves, but up higher (north) on the mountain about 50 yards. The pit was marked with orange flags on a tree near it. The pit is a straight drop down to a room that looked like there was a crawl-way out of it. At the very top the opening was maybe 3' across and looked like it was 5' across as you made it down to the bottom of the pit which looked 10' across and then a crawl-way exited out of sight.

Has anyone here dropped this pit and can give some more info? The pit is tight and I don't want to drop it if it is a certain dead end. I'm a newly trained vertical caver and don't want to make that effort for a super tight climb back up.

That may be Petty Pit (GWK 576). It is listed as being 26 feet deep with five feet of cave at the bottom. I haven't done it, but I recall seeing the entrance several years back.

Thanks or the info. Can anyone confirm or does anyone else have input?

The sounds familiar. Wouldn't have happened to look like this?

We found lots of little sinks and other crawl-ins around the screech owl area. Fun area to search around.

The hole was tighter than that. But, the depth looks just the same. What cave is that you are poking your head out of?

That is my friend, and we aren't certain it's listed, and we were just scouting that day and couldn't take measurements. Found lots of small caves around that area. All very short, 30'-40' max.
